If you knew you'd live to 100, how would you change your life today?

Lose Your Cool or Stay Cool?

Every day there is something – an event, an interaction, a realization – that has the potential to make you angry. How do you handle it? Do you lose your cool or stay cool? That is the question.

Defined

It really doesn’t matter what sets you off. We all have different thresholds and triggers when it comes to anger. By definition, anger is a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility.

Typically, anger is characterized by feelings of stress, frustration, and irritation. It happens. It’s a normal response. Everyone gets angry at one time or another.

Funny?

Anger management is a funny subject. Literally, there have been movies made and more than one standup comedian has built a show around the topic. And while laughter is wonderful, anger can ruin the moment, the day, or sometimes your life.

Effects

Anger also can have serious health consequences. Being mad as hell all the time is potentially reason enough not to want to live a long life. But being angry all the time can also make healthy longevity no longer an option. Maybe it should be mad is hell – physical hell.

Anger can leave its mark throughout the body. Physical responses include:

  • Raised blood pressure
  • Adrenaline and cortisol spike
  • Increase in body temperature
  • Elevated energy levels
  • Muscle tension/fight or flight response

Consequences

These responses can lead to many physical problems including heart disease/heart attack, stroke, a weakened immune system, anxiety, and depression. So, we’re talking about both longevity and quality of life.
