If you knew you'd live to 100, how would you change your life today?

Seven Generations: A Long-Term Environmental Perspective

We are part of everything that is beneath us, above us, and around us. Our past is our present, our present is our future, and our future is seven generations past and present.

Winona LaDuke

When it comes to The 100 Year Lifestyle perspective, it’s always been live your best today and plan for your best tomorrow. That is sage advice regardless of whether you are talking about health, finances, relationships, or whatever. We also believe there is no distinction between the health of people and the health of the planet; both are inextricably intertwined. By developing a long-term perspective towards the environment, the decisions we make today will lead to a more sustainable lifestyle and a healthier future for ourselves, the planet, and future generations. The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy had a philosophy that the decisions we make today should result in a sustainable world seven generations into the future. Let’s explore that concept.

Commitment

For the Haudenosaunee, the Seventh Generation philosophy is integral to their life.  Also, it is the basis of their commitment to their community, their understanding of stability, and the foundation of their personal values that they put into action daily. By adapting this philosophy they built a strong nation. Additionally, they are known for their ability to easily and effectively adapt to change while maintaining their culture. They keep a constant focus on their commitment to the future generations while maintaining the lives and traditions of their people.

When many people hear “seven generations” they think that’s a crazy amount of time. But the fact is, that’s approximately 175 years. A generation is defined as 25 years or the birth of a parent to the birth of a child. With four and five living generations becoming the new norm, we’re already getting very close to that Seventh Generation mark!

The Choices You Make

At 100 Year Lifestyle we also look beyond the moment. We consider the impact of our choices as we age to perhaps 100 years and beyond. However, would you make still different decisions and adapt a different philosophy towards your lifestyle if you considered every decision you made on the impact it would have seven generations from now? What car would you drive? Would you adapt a different lifestyle and spending habits with an eye towards lessening your footprint on the planet? Would you advocate more for fewer chemicals in our food and greater preservation of our land? All of the choices we make as part of our 100 Year Lifestyle affect not only ourselves but the planet, whether or not we are aware of their impact.

The Power of You

As you create your 100 Year Lifestyle, be aware of the power of your vision. Consider the impact of your actions, today and far into the future. Be mindful of the environment. Make choices, get involved, and speak up regarding your health and the health of the planet. Future generations will thank you for it!

We all want to grow old on a vibrant, healthy Mother Earth!
