If you knew you'd live to 100, how would you change your life today?

Radically Reframing Your Concept of Age

If you’ve been following The 100 Year Lifestyle for any period of time, you know that aging is an opportunity to live your best life, 100% for 100 years or more. We’ve also given you dozens of examples of centenarians, near-centenarians, and supercentenarians who are doing just that. But this month, as together we’ve been defining, redefining, and refining certain aspects of your 100 Year Lifestyle, it’s time you look at the details of how you think of age and aging, and reframe them once and for all. It’s time to start radically reframing your concept of age.

Do you ever find yourself saying—or thinking—”I’m too old for that”? When you hear the words “senior citizen” does a certain image or impression come to mind? Do you use language like “fighting aging” or complain about your wrinkles or gray hair? If so, your 100 Year Lifestyle could use a reframing, or at best a tune up.

Things that Matter

Language matters. Beliefs matter. How you think of yourself and how you describe yourself matters. If you want to truly be pro-aging (at any age) then you need to recognize your own worth and uniqueness. You need to, as Victor Frankl said, say yes to life, no matter what age you are.

Do you find yourself changing course or putting your aspirations on hold because you think you’re too old to do something? Remember, you become old when you stop growing and learning—regardless of your age. The real question is, do you feel capable of starting something new? And, if not now, when?

Ageism

If your concept of aging could use a radical—or not so radical—reframing, know you’re not alone. In a poll of Americans aged 50 and over, 80% said they experienced some form of ageism daily. You’re clearly not the only one in need of reframing. But, by reframing your own attitudes you will change your behavior, present differently to the world, and lead the pack in busting the outdated myths that exist in society.

Seize the Moment

Reframing aging is just another opportunity to not only live healthier and younger longer, but also to express your creativity as you explore new opportunities in life.

So, from now on, instead of talking about “senior moments,” talk about seizing the moment. That’s called living 100:100, 100% for 100 years…or more.

World Senior Citizens Day

August 21 is World Senior Citizens Day. The day was created to recognize the contributions made by and celebrate the seniors in your life or you being a senior! Either way, seniors today are capable of living wonderful, active, healthy lives until their last breath, and that’s truly something to celebrate!
