Jayne Burns tried, but she just couldn’t stay retired. This past accountant has been working as a fabric cutter for the last 26 years at a store 20 miles from her home. She drives herself to her shift four days a week. Her 20-something colleagues love her and have made her a TikTok star. She’s having a fabulous time. And she’s 100.
After Jayne’s husband died, she decided she needed something to do. She wanted to stay active and be around people. So she went back to work, at the age of 74.
Internet Sensation
Starting in 2021, Jayne and her colleague Maggie HusVar became internet sensations. One video of the two of them has been viewed over 9 million times. The more than 16,000 comments all pretty much say the same thing – Jayne is amazing, she doesn’t look her age, and “I want to be just like Jayne.”
Not Really Work
Jayne has several friends like Maggie, saying that she seeks out co-workers who are kind and friendly because then it doesn’t seem like work. She believes it’s no coincidence that her best jobs always had the best co-workers.
Jayne says that work helps her stay occupied and gives her a reason to get up in the morning. However, when asked she doesn’t point to one single thing as the reason for her longevity.
Clearly, Jayne’s lifestyle, what’s been keeping her going at 100% for 100 years and counting, involves a multi-generational surround sound support system. What gives you a reason to get up in the morning?
