With so many things requiring our attention, particularly this holiday season, it’s easy to forget that we all need to be aware of our mental health. Gratitude plays, or can play, a tremendous role in our health and wellbeing. As we’ve written before, feelings cause results, and daily gratitude is an important component of a healthy life.
Let’s break it down. What is gratitude? It can be defined in different ways by different people, but according to Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D., professor of psychology at University of California-Davis, and author of The Little Book of Gratitude, gratitude is:
…a trait, a state, an attitude, a way of coping, and a virtue all rolled into one. Gratitude is an affirmation of the goodness in one’s life and the recognition that the sources of this goodness lie at least partially outside the self.
Numerous studies over the years have proven that gratitude creates happiness, and lack of gratitude can create physical as well as mental problems. If we don’t cultivate gratitude and instead walk around feeling like we don’t have enough, or aren’t enough, this leads to negativity. Negativity can lead to depression. Depression has been linked to poor heart health, inflammation, and a weakened immune system. As we mentioned, feelings cause results.
Gratitude, on the other hand, makes people happier thereby leading to less depression, less anxiety, and better sleep. But it also affects people’s biology by lowering inflammation levels and creating better heart health. Robert A. Emmonds, Ph.D. has determined that:
Gratitude is good medicine. Clinical trials indicate that the practice of gratitude can have dramatic and lasting effects in a person’s life. It can lower blood pressure and improve immune function … grateful people engage in more exercise, have better dietary behaviors, are less likely to smoke and abuse alcohol, and have higher rates of medication adherence.
It is interesting to note that what Emmonds is really talking about here is a lifestyle, something we know a lot about!
