If you knew you'd live to 100, how would you change your life today?

Off the Charts

Off the Charts

When it comes to life in general, and particularly our health, we all want to be off the charts. We want to do everything we can at the highest level possible for as long as possible. At The 100 Year LifestyleⓇ we call that living at 100% for 100 years or more! However, Hilda Jaffe, a remarkable 102-year-old New Yorker, has taken “off the charts” to a whole new level even for us—living a vibrant, independent, and healthy life well past the century mark. Hilda’s story is more than inspiring; it’s a call to action for all of us to break free from conventional, limiting thinking. She’s living proof that it is possible to live an “off the charts” life by adopting principles of The 100 Year LifestyleⓇ that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Exceptional Longevity

Hilda’s doctor calls her an outlier, noting, “You’re the only centenarian who walks in without an assistant or a cane. You’re off the charts.” But how does she do it?

  • Staying Physically Active: Hilda walks at least 3,000 steps every day, whether outside in her Manhattan neighborhood or pacing the hallways of her apartment building on rainy days. This consistent movement keeps her body strong and her mind sharp.
  • A Simple, Balanced Diet: Hilda doesn’t follow a fad diet. Instead, she enjoys practical meals like eggs and bread for breakfast, sandwiches or leftovers for lunch, and salads with protein for dinner. She even indulges occasionally in her favorite comfort foods, such as hamburgers and French toast, proving balance is key.
  • Mental and Social Engagement: Currently, Hilda volunteers as a tour guide at the New York Public Library, participates in book clubs, and regularly attends cultural events like opera and museum exhibits. This kind of cognitive stimulation and social interaction is essential for longevity and mental health.
  • A Pragmatic, Positive Outlook: Hilda approaches life with optimism, curiosity, and acceptance. She focuses on what she can control and finds joy in the world around her. As she says, “Every day is a new day. I don’t take it for granted at all.”

Redefining What’s Possible

Hilda’s story proves that age is just a number, and that longevity isn’t just about living longer—it’s about living better. In a world obsessed with medical metrics and quick fixes, she reminds us that there’s no magic pill for a long, healthy life. Instead, the keys are in lifestyle.

Your Call to Live “Off the Charts”

So, what are you waiting for? Start making the small changes that lead to a big impact. Walk that extra block, pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read, and focus on the joy in each day. Perhaps if we all were to see age as an opportunity and not a limitation, we’d all experience an “off the charts” life like Hilda!
